Whoever is in charge of IT is always something of a flea circus keeper. They must have everything under control—all issues that might spring up on devices at any place in their organization. They are supposed to be enablers, bringing new areas of operation to bear, but without losing control.
Examples include (unofficial) bring-your-own-device (BYOD) challenges right through to specific hardware requirements and unauthorized equipment purchases by operational departments. There are many reasons why “foreign” devices are used in businesses. In many cases, Mac® computers are used in organizations even if they are not included in the approved hardware pool, which impacts the balancing act IT needs to perform every day: meet the requirements of users and departments but at the same time have a consistent, safely administered environment as much as possible.
Multiple Platforms Cause Extra Cost
Businesses are not the only places to find multi-platform IT environments—public institutions such as city councils are just as likely to have them. This leads to workarounds and manual effort needed to organize deployment, data security, and data erasure in this mix-up. One example of a worst-case scenario: Mac devices are completely out of IT’s reach and are administered self-sufficiently by employees.
The city of Reykjavik faced the same problem as many enterprises: 10,000 Windows clients joined by 200 Mac computers that were not integrated into the organization’s device management system. This mixture of platforms has the same reason as many other organizations—the graphic design department predominantly uses Mac.
In the long run, administering more and more Mac computers by workarounds was too costly. IT was already using Microsoft SCCM, so a solution leading to a consistent infrastructure was quite simple: Parallels® Mac Management for Microsoft® SCCM. This enabled the Reykjavik city council to incorporate the 200 Mac computers into the device management system and make the Mac clients accessible for IT.
