How Parallels Inc. (and Parallels Desktop!) got started:
The foundation of this Russian company was built by a brilliant developer named Nick Dobrovolskiy and serial entrepreneur Serguei Beloussov. While the advantages of Parallels Desktop (namely, the ability to avoid re-starting your Apple computer each time the transition from Mac OS to Windows and vice versa) were obvious from the beginning—achieving this goal on a larger scale required a visit Apple in Cupertino, California.
In 2008, Dobrovolskiy and Beloussov traveled to Apple and met the then-developer of the Mac OS, Bertrand Serlet, and marketing executive Phil Schiller to obtain approval for Parallels Desktop joining the Apple sales channel. While Bertrand and Phil initially declined to move forward, infamous Apple founder Steve Jobs joined the meeting and dismissed his co-workers conclusions. He began pelting Dobrovolskiy and Beloussov with questions regarding the virtualization solution and their intentions moving forward. After constructive reflection, Jobs concluded with, “I think it makes sense!”
Parallels Desktop then joined the Apple Sales Channel and launched as the only solution for running Windows on Mac.
Over the years, there have been many attempts to displace Parallels as the global leader for virtualization solutions. Despite ruthless efforts from competitors, Parallels has always held strong. The enduring strength of this virtualization force can be credited to three fundamental things:
